Apartment life with Call ducks

For most apartments, Call ducks are a poor fit. A small flock needs secure outdoor space, open water for bathing, separate clean drinking water, drainage, frequent cleanup and a safe night house. Water, droppings and wet bedding make the demands much larger than the birds' size suggests.

Water needs a yard, not a corner

Ducks need open water where they can submerge and bathe, as well as a separate clean source for drinking. Bathing water quickly becomes dirty. The ground around it needs drainage and room for birds to get in and out without creating a permanent muddy slick.[1][2]

A balcony tub or a bathroom routine does not provide the outdoor water area, flock space and cleaning flow ducks use throughout the day. Trying to squeeze that life indoors leaves every room carrying water, waste and birds that need to forage together.[2][1]

Wet bedding is a daily problem

Ducks splash, shake and pass frequent droppings. Their housing needs soft, absorbent litter that is changed or topped up regularly. A compact indoor room has no good buffer between that work and the places people eat, sleep and relax.[2]

Backyard poultry also calls for careful hygiene. Keep birds and their equipment away from food-preparation areas, and wash hands after touching birds, water containers, eggs or bedding. Those habits are much harder to maintain when the flock shares a small flat.[3]

Think about the flock and the neighbors

Call ducks still need duck company and a safe outdoor routine. Their calls, movement around water and repeated cleanup belong to a setup with room to absorb them. A building hallway and shared walls make every normal duck moment someone else's problem too.[2]

If your home is an apartment, choose an animal whose full daily life fits indoors more naturally. If you already have a suitable yard elsewhere, build the secure run, water drainage and hygiene routine there before bringing home a flock.[2][3]
